Microsoft to Retire Legacy Teams Meeting Controls on Windows and macOS
Microsoft is continuing to evolve Microsoft Teams, but not all changes are additions. While the company recently introduced a new chat-based workflow creation feature, it is now preparing to remove an older capability that some users still rely on.
Legacy feature removal announced for Teams
According to the Microsoft 365 Admin Center message MC1266901, Microsoft will retire legacy external meeting controls in Teams on Windows 10, Windows 11, and macOS. The feature will be permanently disabled starting June 30, 2026.
This functionality allowed external tools and hardware integrations to control key meeting actions such as muting participants, raising hands, toggling cameras, applying background blur, sending reactions, and leaving meetings.
It was widely used by automation tools, custom enterprise setups, and third-party integrations that relied on external control of Teams meetings.
Microsoft says the feature no longer meets its current security standards. The company also cited concerns around long-term reliability and maintainability, suggesting that keeping the feature would introduce unnecessary risk and complexity.
What happens after June 30, 2026
Once removed, any external apps or tools that depend on these controls will stop working. Native controls inside Microsoft Teams will remain fully functional, and supported APIs like Microsoft Graph will continue to work as expected.
Microsoft is giving organizations more than 30 days’ notice, allowing time to adjust workflows or move to supported alternatives.
Microsoft has recently focused on expanding Teams capabilities, including new AI-driven features and chat-based workflow tools. The company has also fixed an issue with the Teams Meeting add-in that affected Classic Outlook users.
