[UPDATE 7:35 AM GMT+1 | 31/3/2026] According to Windows Central, the Vice President of Developer Relations at GitHub has confirmed that product tips were being injected, but the feature was disabled after user backlash.

[ORIGINAL STORY] GitHub has been in the spotlight recently over changes to how Copilot handles user data, but a new controversy is now emerging around how the AI tool behaves inside development workflows.

Promotional Messages Quietly Embedded Across Thousands of Repositories

According to findings shared by Zach Manson, GitHub Copilot is allegedly inserting promotional content directly into pull requests. These messages do not appear as traditional ads, but instead show up as subtle “tips” embedded within generated content.

The promotional snippets reference tools such as Raycast integrations, suggesting a possible push toward ecosystem-driven recommendations. What makes the situation more concerning is the scale, as identical messages have reportedly appeared in more than 11,000 pull requests across multiple repositories.

Hidden HTML Comments Used to Deliver Copilot “Ad-Like” Suggestions

The mechanism behind this behavior appears to rely on hidden HTML comments, specifically tagged with “START COPILOT CODING AGENT TIPS.” These comments allow Copilot to inject messages into code-related outputs without making them immediately obvious as advertising.

Similar activity has also been observed on GitLab, indicating that this may not be limited to a single platform or isolated test. While Microsoft has not officially confirmed the intent behind these insertions, the consistency of the messaging suggests some level of centralized control.

This development comes at a time when AI companies are actively exploring monetization strategies. While OpenAI has acknowledged testing ads in the United States, it has denied any broader rollout. However, recent hiring decisions, including bringing in advertising talent from Meta, have fueled speculation about the future direction of AI products.

The situation also highlights a broader shift in the AI industry, where revenue pressures are beginning to influence how tools generate and present output. As AI becomes more deeply integrated into professional environments, these changes may redefine expectations around neutrality and reliability.

In other GitHub-related developments, the platform has also been linked to a large-scale malware campaign that used fake Visual Studio Code alerts to target developers.
