Microsoft Teases Long-Awaited Movable Taskbar for Windows 11

movable taskbar teased windows 11

Microsoft is preparing a major push to improve Windows 11 quality in 2026, and one of the most requested features might finally arrive: taskbar customization.

According to Neowin, an early preview of the feature briefly appeared in a now-deleted video, giving us a glimpse of how it could work.

Taskbar customization is finally coming to Windows 11

The preview showed a simple way to reposition the taskbar using a right-click menu. Users could switch the taskbar’s position in just a few clicks, with smooth transition animations applied during the change.

However, this version was only a developer debug tool. Microsoft is expected to implement the final feature inside the Settings app instead of using a right-click menu.

The classic drag-to-move functionality, available in older Windows versions, may not return. There is currently no confirmation that Microsoft will support drag-based repositioning.

Taskbar will adapt to different positions

The updated taskbar is designed to work across multiple positions, including the top, sides, and bottom of the screen. The interface will dynamically adjust depending on placement, ensuring that icons and elements remain usable.

There are still some limitations, though. For example, the full search bar won’t be available when the taskbar is placed on the sides. Instead, it will collapse into a simple icon to save space.

The animations shown in the preview build are also not final. Microsoft is expected to refine them further before rolling out the feature publicly.

This feature is part of a broader effort by Microsoft to improve the overall Windows 11 experience. The company is reportedly building a dedicated team focused on quality, performance, and user feedback.

Taskbar customization has been one of the most requested features since Windows 11 launched, and its return signals that Microsoft is starting to address long-standing complaints.

If implemented well, this could be a meaningful step toward making Windows 11 more flexible and user-friendly.
