Microsoft Introduces AI Agents in OneDrive as Copilot Integration Expands
Despite earlier rumors that Microsoft could scale back its AI Everywhere push in Windows 11, the company continues to double down on agentic workflows. Microsoft is now expanding its AI strategy by integrating AI agents directly into OneDrive, bringing Copilot-style intelligence closer to users’ files and folders.
According to Neowin, Microsoft describes OneDrive agents as AI teammates that understand the context of your OneDrive data. These agents can answer questions, summarize content, and surface key details such as deadlines, action items, and document owners across multiple files.
OneDrive agents bring persistent context to Copilot
OneDrive agents are saved as .agent files and behave like standard items stored in OneDrive. Opening an agent launches a full Microsoft Copilot experience that stays grounded in the selected documents or folders, rather than focusing on a single file.
Unlike traditional Copilot interactions, agents maintain persistent context across up to 20 files. Users can name agents, add custom instructions, rename them later, and manage them through search and filters like any other OneDrive file.
Creating an agent requires a Microsoft 365 Copilot license. Users can create agents from the OneDrive web interface by selecting Create or Upload → Agent, or by choosing specific files or folders and selecting Create an agent.
Sharing and availability
Agents can be shared with other users, provided they have access to the underlying documents. Shared users receive the same Copilot experience, grounded in the same content set, which makes agents useful for team collaboration and ongoing projects.
Microsoft says OneDrive agents are now generally available. Any user with a Microsoft 365 Copilot license can start using them immediately.
OneDrive is not the only service seeing updates. Microsoft is also testing KB5074176, which addresses known OneDrive issues in Windows. At the same time, Copilot integration continues to expand elsewhere, with PowerPoint expected to receive AI-powered photo editing features in the near future.
Taken together, these updates suggest Microsoft remains firmly committed to embedding AI agents across its ecosystem, reinforcing its broader AI-first strategy rather than stepping away from it.
